HBO and Armando Iannucci’s space comedy “Avenue 5” is likely coming to an end with the show’s upcoming second season.

The comedy follows the crew of a luxury space cruise ship as they navigate disgruntled passengers and logistical obstacles in an effort to safely return to Earth after the accidental death of the Chief Engineer.

The second season, which the pandemic delayed the start of production on until August last year, has not been scheduled yet though is likely to launch in the Fall.

Deadline today reports that it’s expected to be the series’ last hurrah as due to the time passing, options on the cast have come up and the actors were released. Some have already signed on as regulars on new shows.

HBO has not commented on the report. Hugh Laurie, Josh Gad, Zach Woods, Rebecca Front, Suzy Nakamura, Lenora Crichlow, Nikki Amuka-Bird and Ethan Phillips star.

If ending, “Avenue 5” will be the third space-themed comedy to come to an end this year – Netflix’s “Space Force” has been scrapped after two seasons while Hulu’s soon to launch third season of “The Orville” is expected to be that show’s last.

Update: Iannucci has denied the report, saying in a tweet: “Not true. Ready for more…. And I can’t wait to show Season 2.”
