Detailed schedule for election of Congress chief likely to be out in 3-4 days: Sources
On Monday, party insiders said that a comprehensive schedule for the election of the Congress president would likely be released in the following three to four days. The election administration for the party has stated that they will not deviate from the planned date of September 20 to choose a new leader.
Mistry, head of the party’s Central Election Authority, said, “From our side, we are ready” when asked when the Congress Working Committee (CWC) will accept the final date for the election of the Congress chairman.
“The schedule for the election of the Congress president should be out in the next 3-4 days. It would have the detailed schedule with the dates for filing nominations and withdrawal,” a top source said.
Congressmen everywhere are wondering if Rahul Gandhi will accept the party’s leadership once more. The Congress declared in October of last year that the election of the new Congress president will take place between August 21 and September 20 this year, following a major meeting of its working committee.
As a result of the Congress party’s second consecutive loss in 2019 parliamentary elections, Rahul Gandhi resigned as party president. After an open revolt by a subset of politicians, known as G-23, Sonia Gandhi, who took over the leadership of the party again as interim president, promised to resign in August 2020, but the CWC persuaded her to continue.
Leaders have publicly urged Rahul Gandhi to take over as party chairman again, but the question of who will lead the party remains unanswered.
