Phil Foden has withdrawn from the England squad to face Ukraine and is a doubt for Manchester City’s Champions League clash with Bayern Munich after undergoing appendix surgery.

Foden was part of the England squad for the opening round of Euro 2024 qualifiers against Italy and Ukraine, and took part in training on Saturday.

But he was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery on Sunday morning to remove his appendix.

City released a statement confirming Foden had undergone surgery, would not be available to face Liverpool in the Premier League next weekend and that no date had been set for his return.

“Manchester City can confirm Phil Foden has left the England squad after undergoing surgery in London for acute appendicitis,” the statement began. “Phil will now return to Manchester to begin rehabilitation.

“He will not be fit for this weekend’s Premier League game at home to Liverpool and it is unclear at this stage how long he will be unavailable for.

“We will bring you updates on Phil’s progress.

“Everyone at Manchester City wishes Phil a speedy recovery.”

Foden was a second-half substitute for the win over Italy on Thursday, but lasted only 12 minutes before being withdrawn by manager Gareth Southgate.

The withdrawal after 12 minutes was tactical, with Southgate revealing it was due to Luke Shaw’s red card.

Southgate said: “He [Foden] came up to me and said ‘I know, I get it’ – he knew exactly what we needed to do.

“You obviously don’t want to do that but we needed to get the full-back on.

“And we felt the change of the shape with them having to play around us but with enough bodies to deal with crosses but with wing-backs to stop those crosses was the right way to get around that.”

England take on Ukraine at Wembley on Sunday.

On the club front, following the meeting with Liverpool on Saturday, City travel to Southampton on April 8.

Their sights then turn to the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final with Bayern Munich on April 11. The return leg is on April 19.

City boss Pep Guardiola is having to juggle his options, as his side are battling for honours on three fronts as they are also into the semi-finals of the FA Cup, where they face Sheffield United on April 22.
