Inside Cheryl and Liam Payne’s on-off relationship from son Bear to ‘ruining things’
The One Direction star, now 28, and former Girls Aloud star Cheryl, 38, welcomed Bear back in 2017, and have both opted to keep him out of the spotlight over the years.
After deciding to call it quits in 2017, Liam and Cheryl now co-parent their five year old son, and Liam recently recalled how the first 24 hours after Bear’s birth went during a discussion with Logan Paul on the YouTube star’s ‘Impaulsive’ podcast.
He revealed that Cheryl “haemorrhaged quite badly” during the birth, before detailing how their son is such a “lovely boy” and how “fantastic” his ex-girlfriend is as a mother.

Liam and Cheryl started dating back in 2016, and shocked fans when they went public with their romance as they first met when 14 year old Liam auditioned for The X Factor in 2008.
After weeks of speculation, the couple confirmed their relationship on Instagram before attending the the 69th Annual Cannes Film Festival in May 2016, which marked their red carpet debut as a couple.
Cheryl and Liam continued to share loved-up snaps online and appear at events together, and later that year rumours started to circulate that she was pregnant after she appeared to have a bump.
The couple kept her pregnancy private, but in March 2017 they announced the birth of their baby son on Instagram.
Cheryl posted a sweet snap of Liam cuddling their son, and wrote: “On Wednesday 22nd March Liam and I became parents to an incredibly beautiful, healthy baby boy, weighing 7lb 9 and looking like a dream.
“Although he still doesn’t have a name he is already stealing hearts. We are all madly in love and overwhelmingly happy with our little arrival. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers around the world. A day that now has a different meaning to me forever.”
They went on to name their little one Bear Grey Payne, but have been careful to keep over details about his identity private over the years.
Liam has now opened up about Cheryl’s birth experience, revealing previously unknown details during his appearance on Logan Paul’s podcast.
The One Direction star said: “[Cheryl] haemorrhaged quite badly in birth so she was a sleep the whole day, so the first 24 hours of his life, I was 23 with a baby in a room, and I had to take care of him and I didn’t have any babysitters or anything, but it was very fun.”
“The night finished with me with a PlayStation controller, my little boy on my arm and I’m playing FIFA like this is coolest thing ever. It was the best,” he went on.
He also gave a rare insight into his son’s life, and revealed that he’s very well behaved before praising Cheryl’s parenting skills.
“We’ve been blessed to the point where parents used to come round to our house and Bear was always really calm and listened and whatever else, and the other kids were running around like little savages,” he said.
“Then the mums are going to Cheryl like ‘How did you do that?’. It was almost like that moment in Wolf of Wall Street when he sells the pen – that was literally Cheryl as a parent. She’s been fantastic.”
Liam also explained how he felt when he became a dad at the age of 23 and how it impacted his and Cheryl’s relationship.
“I like to talk to other new dads. You don’t know what is coming and it’s different. And to be honest with you, it ruined a relationship for me at that point but for all the right reasons. I was so excited for him to be born that I was actually worried if I wouldn’t love him enough,” he recalled.
While Cheryl has tended to stay out of the spotlight since welcoming her son, she did previously open up about being a mum.
Speaking to Women’s Health UK, the star said: “My approach to life and the world changed when I became a mother to Bear. I have a completely different perspective now that I’m responsible for another human.”
“I care less about silly stuff and more about the important things in life,” the Promise This hitmaker went on. Like Bear’s health and happiness.”
Cheryl and Liam called it quits after just over two years, eventually confirming their split in July 2018, with Liam claiming that the scrutiny they faced ‘put so much pressure’ on their relationship.
They now amicably co-parent Bear, with Liam previously telling how the situation is very “relaxed”. Speaking to Glamour magazine, the singer said: “Cheryl is literally the best person to co-parent with. No stress involved.
“It’s very, very relaxed, and we spend a lot of time on FaceTime.”
