Love Island host Maya Jama talks Stormzy relationship and insists she’s ‘really single’

Maya Jama has revealed that she is “really, really single” after rumours were circulating that she was back with her ex-boyfriend Stormzy.

The 28 year old TV presenter is replacing Laura Whitmore as the host of Love Island in the new winter series, which starts next week.

In recent weeks, Maya has opened up about her own love life and expectations for the new series ahead of her biggest gig to date.

Maya was once-upon-a-time one half of the biggest power couple in the UK – having dated rapper Stormzy for four years.

The pair got together in 2015 before they were even famous after they met while working at MTV.

They largely kept their relationship out of the spotlight and broke up in 2019.

Speaking to The Times, Maya said: “We were so young when we met, just beginning our careers. We were just little babies.”

She said the couple didn’t put any pressure on themselves at the beginning and admitted she had no idea their relationship would ever become “such a big thing”.

She also told the paper that she didn’t want her relationship overlooking her career. She said that being a woman in the spotlight means that more people are interested in your love life than they are a man’s, which didn’t sit right with her.

Following her split from fiancé Ben Simmons last year, rumours started swirling that her and Stormzy had got back together after they were spotted at several events at the same time.

The former couple were spotted together at the GQ Men of the Year 2022 celebration in November.

Eagled-eyed fans were rooting for them to get back together, three years after splitting up.

However, days after the photos emerged, Maya’s team denied they were romantically linked and confirmed she was still single.

Speaking to the Sunday Times this week, she said: “I’m really, really single right now. Newly single. It’s only been a month but it’s nice.”

At the end of October, Vossi Pop singer Stormzy opened up in a fly-on-the-wall interview with Louis Theroux.

The BBC Two docuseries sees Louis interview some of the biggest names in the entertainment industry, starting with Stormzy – whose real name is Michael Omari.

In it, he admits that he blames himself for his break up with Maya and says it was the “biggest catalyst” for “growth as a man”.

He said: “It was OK, you made a mistake and you lose someone you loved, someone you cared for, someone who is special to you.”
