by Port Windsor welcomes first foreign vessel of the shipping season
Port Windsor welcomed the first “salty” — or ocean-going foreign vessel — of the 2023 shipping season last week when the M/V Egbert Wagenborg arrived at ADM Agri Industries to load grain for export.

The cargo ship’s captain, Francis Bos, said he was surprised the Egbert Wagenborg, which is flagged in the Netherlands, was the first vessel at the port on April 4 considering he originally wasn’t first in line when his ship entered the St. Lawrence Seaway, which opened for the season March 22.
“We tried to be the first in the seaway but we arrived and there was already a ship in line for the opening,” he said. “We did not realize we are the first here (in Windsor). I am very proud that we were the first salty to the port.”
Harbour Master Peter Berry and representatives from ADM Agri welcomed the vessel and presented Bos with a Port Windsor Challenge Coin, which recognizes the first salty in the port.
The Egbert Wagenborg was built in 2017. It is 150 metres long and can carry more than 20,000 metric tonnes. On Sunday, the vessel was at Port Weller, near St. Catharines, loaded with grain and headed for Liverpool, UK.
The Windsor Port Authority receives more than 600 ships each year, delivering more than five million tonnes of aggregate, salt, steel and grain to the region and to ports across the Great Lakes and to overseas destinations.
